Hold luggage (also known as checked baggage) is stored in the cargo hold, which is the large open space located underneath the passenger cabin in the "belly" of the aircraft. In modern commercial planes, this space is roughly equal in length to the cabin above. Depending on the size of the aircraft, the hold is organized in two ways: "Bulk" or "Unit Load Devices" (ULDs). In smaller narrow-body planes like the Boeing 737, bags are loaded one by one by ground crews into a "bulk hold" and secured with netting. In larger wide-body aircraft like the Boeing 787 or Airbus A350, bags are first loaded into large metal containers or pallets (ULDs), which are then rolled into the hold using a motorized floor and "locked" into place. The cargo hold is pressurized and temperature-controlled, though it is generally kept cooler than the cabin (around 7–18°C) to conserve energy. This area also houses other cargo, such as commercial freight, mail, and sometimes pets in a specifically heated section. It is a highly secure, fire-suppressed environment designed to keep the plane’s center of gravity stable during the flight.
