Where does Monterosso to Vernazza trail start?

This trail is about 12 km long and can be hiked in either direction starting from either Monterosso or from Riomaggiore. It is also, of course, possible to hike only certain sections of the trail and visit other villages along the way by either train, boat or bus.

The world-famous hiking trail from Monterosso to Vernazza (part of the Sentiero Azzurro or Blue Path) starts in the "Old Town" (Centro Storico) of Monterosso al Mare. To find the trailhead, you should walk toward the eastern end of the village, past the train station and the main sandy beach, heading through the pedestrian tunnel into the historic district. The path begins near the Hotel Porto Roca; you will see a green metal gate and a ticket booth where you must show your "Cinque Terre Card." The trail immediately starts with a demanding, steep ascent of stone steps that winds through ancient lemon groves and vineyards. For 2026 hikers, it is important to remember that this trail is roughly 3.6 kilometers (2.2 miles) long and takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to complete; the "quintessential" photo opportunity occurs at the end of the hike during the final descent, where the entire colorful harbor of Vernazza is suddenly revealed from above.
