Where does the via dell amore start?

The via del'Amore is a trail from the villages of Riomaggore to Manarola in the Cinque Terre. It is an easy (relatively flat) 30 min walk, and there is a cafe in the middle.

The Via dell'Amore (Way of Love) officially starts in Riomaggiore, the southernmost of the five Cinque Terre villages in Italy. Specifically, the entrance is located just to the left of the Riomaggiore train station as you exit toward the sea. After a massive 12-year redevelopment project, the path fully reopened in 2024/2025 and remains a "must-do" for 2026 visitors. It is a 900-meter paved coastal path that connects Riomaggiore to Manarola. In 2026, access is strictly regulated to prevent overcrowding: it is now one-way only (Riomaggiore to Manarola) for tourists and requires a specific "Cinque Terre Card Via dell’Amore" or a supplement to the standard rail card. Reservations are mandatory during the peak season (March to October). This high-value path is famous for its romantic atmosphere and stunning Mediterranean views, and by starting in Riomaggiore, you can experience the easiest and most picturesque "stroll" in the entire UNESCO World Heritage site before arriving in Manarola for a celebratory seaside lunch.

You can start from either direction (Monterosso, heading south, or Riomaggiore, heading north). But here's a tip: Start from Riomaggiore, where the paths are easier and paved, and work your way up to the more challenging trails. That way, you can stop at any time? and head to the nearest train station if you have to!

Cost. Visiting Cinque Terre should be cheaper than the Amalfi Coast. Of course, so much depends on your choices – how you travel around, where and how long you stay, which restaurants you dine at, etc. But in general, the Amalfi Coast is a much more expensive destination than Cinque Terre.

Chiseled into the cliffside of the Cinque Terre, connecting two of its famous coastal villages, the Via dell'Amore footpath has often been seen as the symbol of the area. Yet the 1km (0.6 mile) trail has been closed since 2012, when it was damaged by landslides and rockfall.

Shopping and prices The Cinque Terre is not cheap. As everywhere in the world, tourism has raised prices. I often go to the market of La Spezia to shop for food, it's much cheaper than the stores of the villages. In restaurants, you have to expect Western European prices.

Corniglia is the least known and the least visited of the five towns in Cinque Terre. Visitors often skip it, discouraged by the lack of a port and rather difficult accessibility; however, those who do come here usually fall in love with this little village and even declare it their favorite terra of all!
