The most famous ghost town in Turkey is Kayaköy (historically known as Levissi), located in the Muğla Province near the popular resort town of Fethiye. This hauntingly beautiful site consists of hundreds of abandoned stone houses and two large Greek Orthodox churches that have sat empty since the 1923 population exchange between Greece and Turkey. Following the end of the Greco-Turkish War, the Greek inhabitants were forced to leave for Greece, and the Turks arriving from Greece found the hillside location unsuitable for their agricultural lifestyle, leaving the town to fall into a state of "preserved decay." In 2026, Kayaköy serves as a "Museum Village" and a somber historical monument. Visitors can wander through the roofless ruins and overgrown narrow streets, which offer a powerful and melancholic glimpse into the complex history of the Anatolian region. The town has also gained international fame as the inspiration for the fictional village of "Eskibahçe" in Louis de Bernières' famous novel, Birds Without Wings.
