In the Indian Railways system, the placement of air-conditioned (AC) compartments—such as 1A (First AC), 2A (Second AC), and 3A (Third AC)—is strategically designed for passenger convenience and operational efficiency. Generally, AC coaches are positioned in the middle of the train or closer to the locomotive (engine). This central placement serves two purposes: it reduces the noise and vibration felt from the ends of the train and places premium passengers closer to platform exits at many major stations. Specifically, 1A is often found at one end of the AC block, followed by 2A and then 3A. Non-AC coaches like Sleeper Class and General/Unreserved compartments are typically attached at the very front and rear ends of the rake. Because train configurations can change, passengers are encouraged to check the "Coach Position" on digital display boards at the station or through apps like IRCTC or EaseMyTrip using their PNR number to find their exact boarding spot.
