As of early 2026, the situation for Western fast-food brands in Russia remains complex due to "franchise entanglements." While the corporate parents of Burger King and KFC (RBI and Yum! Brands, respectively) officially announced their intent to exit and suspended corporate support following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, many locations continue to operate under different names or via independent franchisees. KFC has largely transitioned to a local brand called Rostic's, which features a nearly identical menu and aesthetic. Burger King has faced more difficulty exiting because its master franchisee in Russia refused to close the 800+ locations; while the global parent company has divested its ownership and stopped marketing support, the restaurants still operate using the Burger King name and branding in many cities. Essentially, the "brands" as global entities have left, but the physical restaurants and their menus have been "Russified" or continue to run as "ghost" franchises without the oversight of the original Western parent companies.
