If your Indian Railways ticket status is RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation), you should sit on a Side Lower (SL) berth in your assigned coach. An RAC ticket guarantees that you can board the train and travel, but it does not give you a full bed to sleep in. Instead, the railway assigns two RAC passengers to a single Side Lower berth, which is converted into two separate seats for the duration of the journey. You will be sharing this space with another person, sitting upright during the day and "half-lying" or sitting during the night. The "high-value" aspect of an RAC ticket is that you are the first in line for a confirmed full berth if any passenger with a confirmed ticket fails to show up or cancels at the last minute. Once the Ticket Collector (TTE) verifies the final manifest, they may upgrade you to a vacant "upper" or "middle" berth, allowing you to sleep properly. Until then, you are legally entitled to your shared seat on the side lower, so do not let anyone tell you that you are an "illegal" passenger without a bed.
