Osaka is generally very safe, but in 2026, most locals and frequent travelers suggest avoiding staying in the Kamagasaki (Airi-地区) area within Nishinari-ku. While it is home to many "budget" hostels, it is historically Japan's largest "day-laborer" district and has a higher concentration of homelessness and public intoxication than any other part of the city. While it isn't "dangerous" by Western standards, it can be gritty and uncomfortable for families or solo female travelers. Additionally, be wary of staying too deep within Shinsekai at night; while it’s great for daytime tourism and kushikatsu, it can become rowdy after dark. For the best 2026 experience, stick to Namba, Umeda, or Shinsaibashi, which offer the best balance of safety, transit access, and dining, and avoid the "too-good-to-be-true" cheap hotels located south of the Shin-Imamiya station unless you are a seasoned budget backpacker comfortable with a rougher urban environment.
