Maine is the most forested state in the country with 88.8% of the state covered in forest. 81.9% of New Hampshire is covered with trees which makes it the second most forested state. The third most forested state is West Virginia, with 78.1% of forest coverage.

According to the most recent data from the India State of Forest Report (ISFR) and similar global environmental tracking in 2026, the rankings for forest cover in India vary depending on whether you measure by "Total Area" or "Percentage of Geographical Area." In terms of Total Forest Area, the top three states are: 1. Madhya Pradesh, which has the largest forest cover in the country; 2. Arunachal Pradesh; and 3. Chhattisgarh. However, if you measure by the Percentage of Forest Cover relative to the state's total land area, the ranking changes to: 1. Mizoram (with over 84% forest cover); 2. Arunachal Pradesh; and 3. Meghalaya. These states are critical for biodiversity and carbon sequestration. Globally, if looking at countries with the highest percentage of forest cover, Suriname, Guyana, and Gabon consistently lead. Maintaining these covers is a primary goal of the 2026 climate accords, as these "green lungs" are essential for regulating regional climates and protecting endangered species from habitat loss.
