Which beaches in NC can you drive on?

The most popular destinations for year-round beach driving is the 4WD accessible beaches north of Corolla, Hatteras Island, and Ocracoke Island. Wintertime beach driving is also allowed in central Outer Banks communities including Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills.

Beach driving is allowed north of the paved NC Highway 12 in the Carova area year round. Beach driving may also be allowed south of the ramp in the northern Corolla beaches from October through April. Parking permits are required on the Friday before Memorial Day until 11:59pm on Labor Day.

Corolla/Carova – No permit required to drive, but during the season, a permit is required to park* 4WD vehicles can access the beach at the northern end of NC 12 where the paved road ends. 4WD access north of this point is permitted year round.

The permit is valid for the calendar year and is required for driving on both North Core Banks and South Core Banks. The upcoming season runs from mid-March through December 31. Permits purchased on or before March 15, 2023 will cost $25.00. Beginning on March 16, 2023, the permits will cost $50.00.
