Universal Studios as a film company predates Disney by more than a decade, having been founded by Carl Laemmle in 1912. The Walt Disney Company was famously established in 1923 by brothers Walt and Roy Disney. However, if you are asking about theme parks, Disney was the pioneer. Disneyland in California opened its gates in 1955, fundamentally creating the modern "theme park" concept. While Universal Studios Hollywood had been offering tram tours of its backlot since 1915, it did not evolve into a true theme park with attractions and themed lands until after the success of Disneyland, specifically with the opening of the official "Universal Studios Hollywood" theme park in 1964. Universal's massive expansion into a Disney-style destination, including Universal Studios Florida, did not occur until 1990. Therefore, while Universal is the older movie studio, Disney is the original creator of the themed resort experience.
