It contains approximately 250,000 lakes (roughly one-fifth of the world’s freshwater), including four of the five Great Lakes that border Canada. The sheer number comes from its vast area, the Canadian Shield geology, and historical glacial activity.

If considering number of lakes relative to size, Nunavut has a huge number as well, but Ontario still leads in total count.
