"Better" depends entirely on your vacation style. The Dutch side (Sint Maarten) is famous for its high-energy nightlife, large casinos, high-rise resorts, and duty-free shopping in Philipsburg. It feels more "Americanized," uses the US Dollar widely, and is the hub for cruise ships and the famous Maho Beach (where planes fly low overhead). The French side (Saint Martin) offers a more laid-back, "European-chic" vibe. It is world-renowned for its gastronomy—especially in the village of Grand Case—and features boutique hotels, nude-friendly beaches like Orient Bay, and charming French bakeries. The French side feels more secluded and romantic, but it can be more expensive and sometimes has a slower "island time" service rhythm. Most travelers find the best experience by staying on the French side for the atmosphere and food, while visiting the Dutch side for activities and shopping, as there is no physical border between the two.
