Choosing between the Toronto Zoo and the Ontario Science Centre depends heavily on your interests and the current status of the facilities. As of early 2026, the Toronto Zoo remains a premiere, massive outdoor destination located in the Rouge Valley. It is better for those who enjoy walking, nature, and seeing over 5,000 animals across specialized pavilions like the African Rainforest or the Tundra Trek. It is a full-day commitment requiring significant physical activity. Conversely, the Ontario Science Centre has historically been the go-to for interactive, indoor learning. However, it is important to note that the Science Centre is currently in a major transition phase. Following the closure of its longtime Don Mills location, it has been operating out of temporary "satellite" spaces at the Harbourfront Centre and Sherway Gardens while a new permanent home is constructed at Ontario Place. While these pop-up exhibits like "KidSpark" are excellent for younger children (ages 10 and under), they lack the sheer scale and variety of the original building. Therefore, for a comprehensive "tourist" experience in 2026, the Toronto Zoo offers a much more complete and traditional attraction compared to the currently downsized Science Centre.
