Much of the rift valley floor is occupied by Lake Malawi, 570 km long and on average 60 km wide. The surface of the lake is 474 m above sea level and its floor descends to 225 m below the sea level. Maximum depth is close to 700 m and the flanks of the rift rise 400-2000 m above the sur- face of the lake.
