Lake Geneva (Lac Léman) is significantly larger than Lake Zurich. Lake Geneva is the largest lake in Switzerland and one of the largest in Western Europe, covering an area of approximately 580 square kilometers (224 square miles). It is shared between Switzerland and France and is famous for its deep blue waters and the iconic Jet d'Eau fountain in the city of Geneva. In contrast, Lake Zurich is much smaller, covering only about 88 square kilometers (34 square miles). While Lake Zurich is a central part of life in the city of Zurich and offers beautiful views of the surrounding hills, it is roughly one-sixth the size of Lake Geneva in terms of surface area. Lake Geneva is also much deeper and holds a far greater volume of water. If you are looking for a massive, sea-like expanse with a backdrop of the high Alps, Geneva is the clear winner, whereas Zurich offers a more intimate, urban-lake experience that is perfect for local recreation and shorter boat cruises.
