Croatia’s tourism industry is dominated by European visitors, with Germany consistently ranking as the number one source of tourists by a significant margin. For decades, German travelers have flocked to the Istria and Dalmatia coasts for their pristine waters and high-value-for-money campsites and resorts. The second most frequent visitors are typically from neighboring Slovenia, followed by Austria, Poland, and the Czech Republic, reflecting the "driving distance" accessibility of Croatia to Central Europe. In recent years, and continuing into 2026, there has been a massive surge in visitors from the United Kingdom and the United States, particularly to "Game of Thrones" filming locations like Dubrovnik and Split, as well as the world-famous party islands like Hvar. Interestingly, Italy also remains a top source of tourists, as many Italians cross the Adriatic via ferry to enjoy the more rugged and often more affordable Croatian coastline. According to the Croatian National Tourist Board, the country has also seen a growing "digital nomad" population from Australia and Canada, but the core of the tourism market remains the "auto-tourists" coming from Germany and Central Europe during the peak summer months.
