Which Pompeii entrance is closest to the train station?

If you are headed to the ruins at Pompeii, the Porta Marina Superiore entrance is directly opposite the Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri station along the Circumvesuviana line, and the Porta Marina Inferiore (Piazza Esedra) entrance, where our recommended itinerary begins, is a few meters further down.

The entrance closest to the most popular train station is Porta Marina. If you are arriving on the Circumvesuviana train from Naples or Sorrento, you will get off at the Pompei Scavi – Villa dei Misteri station; from there, the Porta Marina gate is less than a 5-minute walk (roughly 330 feet) from the platform. This is considered the "main" entrance and offers the most facilities, including luggage storage and information kiosks. In 2026, if you find Porta Marina too crowded, you can walk about 6 minutes further to the Piazza Esedra entrance, which is often less congested. If you happen to take the national Trenitalia rail to the modern town's "Pompei" station, you should instead use the Piazza Anfiteatro entrance, which is closer to the amphitheater side of the ruins. For the quintessential "archaeological" experience, Porta Marina remains the undisputed gateway for rail travelers.
