Doritos were famously invented at Disneyland in the early 1960s at a restaurant called Casa de Fritos (now Rancho del Zocalo). To reduce food waste, the kitchen staff took stale tortillas, cut them into triangles, fried them, and seasoned them with basic spices. These "toasted" chips became a massive hit with park guests, eventually catching the attention of Archibald Clark West, a Frito-Lay marketing executive. West negotiated with the restaurant’s supplier to produce the chips on a larger scale. Frito-Lay officially launched Doritos nationally in 1966, initially as a plain salted chip before the legendary "Taco" and "Nacho Cheese" flavors were introduced. Today, a plaque near the restaurant honors this origin story, cementing Disneyland’s legacy not just in entertainment, but in the history of global snack food.
