If you are traveling on the Tokaido Shinkansen between Tokyo and Kyoto/Osaka, you should book Seat E in ordinary cars (or Seat D in Green Cars). When heading westward from Tokyo, Mt. Fuji will appear on the right-hand side of the train. The best views typically occur about 40 to 45 minutes after departing Tokyo Station, shortly after passing Mishima Station. If you are traveling eastward toward Tokyo, you should still book Seat E, but the mountain will be on your left-hand side. This "E" seat is always the window seat on the two-seat side of the 3+2 layout in standard class. Pro tip: even with the correct seat, Mt. Fuji is notoriously shy and often obscured by clouds. Your best chance of a clear view is during the colder winter months (December to February) or early in the morning. If you are traveling with large luggage, you should also look for the "Seat with Oversized Baggage Area" at the very back of the car, which can be booked specifically in the E-seat column so you can enjoy the view while keeping your bags secure behind you.
