Universal Studios Hollywood is significantly older than its Florida counterpart. The Hollywood location originally opened as a film studio in 1915 when founder Carl Laemmle invited the public to watch silent movies being made for just 25 cents. However, the "modern" theme park era began on July 15, 1964, with the launch of the iconic Glamor Tram tour. In contrast, Universal Studios Florida in Orlando didn't open until June 7, 1990. While Universal Studios Florida was designed from the ground up to be a destination theme park to compete with Disney World, the Hollywood version evolved organically from an active production lot. This is why Universal Studios Hollywood is much smaller and built into the side of a hill; it had to work around existing soundstages. Even in 2026, the distinction remains clear: Hollywood offers the authentic, historic "Studio Tour" through real backlots where films are still shot today, whereas the Florida resort is a much larger, multi-park destination built specifically for high-capacity tourism and massive "immersive lands" like the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
