US Airways was officially bought by and merged with American Airlines in a massive deal that was finalized in December 2013. This created what was at the time the world's largest airline. Interestingly, while "American Airlines" was the surviving brand and name, the merger was actually a "reverse takeover" led by the management team of US Airways (led by Doug Parker). The two airlines operated under a single operating certificate starting in 2015, and the US Airways name was completely retired in October of that year when the last flight, "Cactus 1939," landed in Philadelphia. This merger was the final "mega-merger" in a decade-long consolidation of the U.S. aviation industry, following Delta's purchase of Northwest and United's merger with Continental. In 2026, the legacy of US Airways lives on through its major hubs in Charlotte and Philadelphia, which remain critical pillars of the global American Airlines network, and through the many former US Airways employees who now form a significant portion of American's leadership and frontline workforce.
