The Bellagio was the brainchild of casino magnate Steve Wynn and his company, Mirage Resorts, Inc. It opened on October 15, 1998, and at the time was the most expensive hotel ever built (costing roughly $1.6 billion). The resort was inspired by the Lake Como town of Bellagio in Italy, a vision Wynn developed after vacationing there. The primary architect was Jon Jerde, known for his "experiential" designs, and the interior was designed by Roger Thomas. Wynn’s goal was to shift Las Vegas toward high-end luxury and fine art, famously housing a multi-million dollar gallery inside the hotel. In 2000, Wynn sold Mirage Resorts to MGM Grand Inc., which formed MGM Resorts International. While MGM has owned and operated the property for over 25 years, the "DNA" of the Bellagio—from the Fountains to the Conservatory—remains a testament to Steve Wynn’s transformative impact on the Las Vegas Strip.
