Who owns Double Island off Palm Cove?

Its owner, Hong-Kong businessman Benny Wu, coined the resort a paradise for high-end tourists at “the very top end of the market” after purchasing the island for $5.68 million in 2012.

As of February 2026, Double Island is officially back under the control of the Queensland Government. The island, located just off the coast of Palm Cove in Far North Queensland, was previously held under a long-term tourism lease by a private developer, but that lease was forfeited in June 2024 due to the site falling into significant disrepair and failing to meet development requirements. Following the forfeiture, the Crisafulli Government took steps to convert the island from a Land Act Reserve to state-owned freehold land. This legal shift was crucial because it allows the state government to negotiate new commercial leases with more stringent accountability measures. Currently, the Department of Natural Resources and Mines is administering the island while working to make the site safe and preparing it for future redevelopment. The government has conducted extensive community and industry consultation to find a "right operator" who will revitalize the island as a premier tourism destination while potentially integrating Indigenous culture and ensuring some level of public access for the local community.
