Who owns GO Train?

Metrolinx currently owns 80% of the GO's rail corridors. All GO Transit fares are calculated by the fare zones that the origin and destination of the trip are in, as well as by passenger category (adult, student, senior or child).

GO Transit (the GO Train and Bus system) is owned and managed by Metrolinx, which is a crown agency of the Government of Ontario, Canada. Metrolinx was created to coordinate and integrate all modes of transportation in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). While the government owns the infrastructure, the actual day-to-day operation and maintenance of the trains are handled by private contractors. For many years, Bombardier (and later Alstom) held the contract for operations; however, as of 2025, a global consortium known as ONxpress was selected to lead the massive "GO Expansion" project, which includes taking over the operation of the rail system to provide faster, more frequent, and electrified service. Therefore, while your ticket money goes to the provincial government's agency, the people driving the trains and maintaining the tracks are often employees of these specialized international private-sector partners.

That said, GO Transit tickets are a lot cheaper than tickets for VIA Rail trains: A one-way ticket from Toronto's Union Station to the Kitchener GO (the farthest point on the line right now) costs less than $20. The same trip with VIA Rail can be as expensive as $89 (business class), $34 for economy.
