Who owns the majority of NYC?

Somewhat unsurprisingly the single largest property-holder in New York City is city government, with various agencies taking all but one of the top 10 and most of the top 50 slots.

The ownership of New York City is not held by a single entity, but the City of New York itself is the largest landowner, controlling over 362,000 acres, which includes parks, schools, and government buildings. Among private entities, the Catholic Church is historically one of the largest landowners, with vast holdings across all five boroughs. In the corporate world, the title of "largest private landlord" often shifts between the NYC Landmark properties and massive real estate investment trusts (REITs). Currently, Vornado Realty Trust and SL Green Realty own significant portions of Manhattan's commercial real estate, including iconic skyscrapers. Another major player is the Trinity Church Wall Street, which has held onto hundreds of thousands of square feet of prime Lower Manhattan real estate since a land grant from Queen Anne in 1705. In the residential sector, companies like Related Companies and The Blackstone Group own thousands of apartment units. It is a complex "patchwork" of ownership where the most valuable land is held by a mix of historic religious institutions, city government, and a few high-powered multi-billion dollar real estate firms.
