The Canadian Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is mandatory for most visa-exempt foreign nationals traveling to Canada by air, but there are several key groups who are exempt. U.S. citizens are the most prominent group; they only need a valid U.S. passport to enter. Additionally, U.S. Lawful Permanent Residents (Green Card holders) are also exempt from the eTA requirement, regardless of their original nationality. Other exempt individuals include travelers arriving by land or sea (such as from the U.S. border), holders of a valid Canadian visa, and members of the Royal Family. Diplomats accredited to the Government of Canada and flight crews also generally fall under the exemption list. It is important to note that even if you are exempt from the eTA, you still need to carry proper identification, such as a passport or Nexus card, to prove your status at the port of entry.
