Why are airlines doing Basic Economy?

The rationale was simple; they didn't want to lose sales and loyal customers to ultra-low-cost carriers like Allegiant, Spirit, and Frontier. Basic economy exists so the big airlines can better segment the market, keep economy fliers 'in the family,' and try to upsell them to less restricted fares.
