Why are clouds so low in Maui?

Areas of high topography are dry, as the trade wind inversion prevents clouds from rising high enough for orographic precipitation to occur there. The high summits and leeward slopes receive most of their annual precipitation during winter storms, when high-altitude, low pressure systems develop in the subtropics.
