Croatians, particularly those from the Dalmatian coast and the Dinaric Alps, are among the tallest people in the world due to a unique combination of genetics and diet. Scientific studies have identified a high frequency of the Y-haplogroup I-M170 in this population, a genetic marker linked to the "mammoth hunters" of the Upper Paleolithic era. These ancestors evolved a large physical stature to hunt big game in the rugged mountain terrain. This genetic blueprint is supported by a traditional "Mediterranean-Balkan" diet rich in high-quality proteins (dairy, fish, and meat) and calcium, which maximizes growth during puberty. Furthermore, Croatia has a massive sporting culture where physical height is prized in basketball and water polo, leading to a "societal selection" where taller individuals are often more active and prominent. Average male height in the Dinaric region can exceed 185 cm (6'1"), rivaling the Dutch for the global top spot.
