Why are so many rides down at Disney World?

Attractions close for routine maintenance, safety upgrades, improvements, and reimaginings. (Updated November 8, 2023.) While no one wants attraction downtime during their trip to Walt Disney World, refurbishments are necessary to keep the rides looking good (and safe!) for future visitors.



Ride downtime in early 2026 is largely due to "Refurbishment Season" and a significant new development cycle. Traditionally, Disney performs bulk maintenance in the winter months (January–March) following the holiday rush. In 2026, several high-profile attractions are offline for major reimaginings: Rock 'n' Roller Coaster is closing in March 2026 to be rethemed to The Muppets, and Big Thunder Mountain is undergoing an extensive multi-year track replacement set to conclude in spring 2026. Furthermore, with the closure of entire areas like Dino-Rama and parts of the Rivers of America for new land construction (Villains Land and Cars Land), Disney has less "operational bandwidth" to keep other aging attractions running, leading to more frequent unplanned technical breakdowns as systems are pushed to their limits.
