Why are there no mosquitoes in Tenerife?

Mosquitoes are rarely a problem on any of the Canary Islands. I have never had a bite in all my visits, no matter what time of year. It's generally too dry and not green enough for mozzies in the south of Tenerife, can't remember ever having a problem with them.
