Why are Yeti backpacks recalled?

About 1.9 million Yeti brand coolers and soft gear cases were recalled by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission on Thursday because various products' magnet closures could detach and cause serious injury.

Yeti recently issued a massive voluntary recall for its Hopper M20 Backpacks (along with M30 coolers and SideKick Dry gear) due to a serious magnet ingestion hazard. These products utilized a high-powered magnetic strip to seal the main compartment; however, it was discovered that the heat-sealed plastic strip holding these magnets could fail, allowing the small, powerful magnets to detach and fall out. If two or more magnets are swallowed by a child or pet, they can attract to each other through intestinal walls, leading to life-threatening perforations, blockages, or infection. In 2026, the recall remains active, and owners are urged to stop using these items immediately. Yeti offers a full refund in the form of a gift card plus an extra $25, or a replacement product like a Tundra hard cooler, to ensure customers transition to a safer closure system.
