Why did Great Bear Lodge change to Great Wolf Lodge?

The lodge's two mascots were Wiley the Wolf and Biko the Bear. Following the opening of the Traverse City, Michigan and Kansas City, Kansas locations in 2003, it was decided all resorts would be labeled under the Great Wolf Lodge banner to make the brand more universal and well known.

Great Wolf Lodge at first had a slightly different name when it came onto the scene. Great Wolf Lodge originally began as a small indoor water park resort called Black Wolf Lodge, founded in 1997 by brothers Jack and Andrew Turk Waterman, the original owners of Noah's Ark Water Park in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin.

In August 2000, the resort's name was changed to Great Wolf Lodge by The Great Lakes Companies founders Marc Vaccaro and Bruce Neviaser following a 1999 suit in which the Lodge was sued by the similarly-named Blackwolf Run Golf Course in Koshler, Wisconsin.
