Why did Uber charge me wait time?

Short Answer: Because you were making the driver wait to drive to your stop. Drivers are paid by two metrics: Time & Distance. They are (typically) paid 3x as much for distance traveled as time spent. If your driver needs to wait longer than a few minutes for you to get into the car then they are losing money.
