Why do bed bugs only bite me and not my husband?

Bed bugs can have a specific preference of blood type while some may only be present on the side or part of the bed. These bugs might be present in another bed and not yours. A different bed bug type might also bite you or ward them off without realizing what they are doing.

It is a common misconception that bed bugs "pick" favorites; in reality, they are likely biting both of you, but only you are having an allergic reaction. Bed bug saliva contains an anesthetic and an anticoagulant, and the "bite" marks we see are actually the body's immune response to these substances. Many people (about 30-50%) show no skin reaction at all to bed bug bites, meaning your husband could be getting bitten just as often but simply doesn't itch or develop welts. There is also minor evidence that bed bugs may be slightly more attracted to certain blood types or higher CO2 output, but the discrepancy in visible marks is almost always due to individual sensitivity. If you are seeing "breakfast, lunch, and dinner" patterns (three bites in a row), the bugs are definitely active, and you should inspect the seams of your mattress and headboard immediately, regardless of who is showing symptoms.
