Why do cartoons have 4 fingers?

The most popular explanation for why cartoon characters only have four fingers is all about the animation process, as drawing only four fingers instead of five is a lot easier and thus saves the animators and the studio time and money.

Cartoons traditionally feature characters with four fingers (three fingers and a thumb) primarily for efficiency, aesthetics, and cost-savings. In the early days of hand-drawn animation, removing one finger per hand saved animators a significant amount of time and thousands of pencil strokes over the course of a feature-length film or a 100-episode series. Walt Disney famously remarked that if Mickey Mouse had five fingers, his hands would look like "a bunch of bananas" because the proportions of the character were too small for five distinct digits to be clear and appealing. Additionally, four fingers provide enough flexibility for most hand gestures—pointing, gripping, and waving—without the visual "clutter" of a fifth digit in a simplified art style. While some modern, realistic animation styles use five fingers, the four-fingered "toon hand" remains the industry standard for classic and stylized characters because it avoids the "uncanny valley" of overly realistic hands.
