Why do Costa Ricans say Mucho Gusto?

(Con) mucho gusto / mucho, mucho gusto / muchísmo gusto: All these phrases mean 'with great pleasure. ' In response to 'thank you,' it's common to hear variants of mucho gusto in Costa Rica instead of de nada, the standard reply in other Spanish-speaking countries.

In Costa Rica, the phrase "Mucho Gusto" (or "Con mucho gusto") is used as a polite replacement for "De nada" (You're welcome). While in many other Spanish-speaking countries "Mucho Gusto" is strictly used for "Nice to meet you" during introductions, Costa Ricans—or Ticos—use it to mean "It is my pleasure." When you say "Gracias," a Tico will respond with "Mucho gusto" to emphasize their hospitality and the genuine joy they take in being helpful. This is a reflection of the national ethos of "Pura Vida," which prioritizes friendliness, community, and a relaxed, positive outlook on life. It is considered much more gracious and warm than "De nada," which literally translates to "It’s nothing." Using "Con mucho gusto" back to locals is a fantastic way for tourists to show respect for this unique linguistic and cultural tradition.
