Why do so many people get bogged at Inskip point?

Tyre pressure is key The recommended tyre pressure is 25psi, however in particularly soft spots (Inskip point is a killer) experts recommend lowering your pressure as low as 15-17psi. Use your judgement on the day, and if in doubt, play around with different pressures until you feel you have more traction.

Inskip Point, the gateway to K'gari (Fraser Island) in Queensland, is a notorious "graveyard" for 4WD vehicles primarily due to incorrect tyre pressure and shifting "sugar sand." The sand at the barge loading area is incredibly soft, deep, and dry, which offers very little traction for standard tyres. Drivers often attempt the crossing without lowering their tyre pressure to the recommended 15–20 psi; high pressure causes the wheels to act like "knives" that dig into the sand rather than "snowshoes" that float on top. Additionally, the entrance and exit tracks often become "chewed out" by larger vehicles or those towing heavy campers, creating deep ruts that can bottom out a car with low ground clearance. Loss of momentum is the final culprit; if a driver hesitates or brakes in the middle of a soft patch, the vehicle sinks instantly. The area is so famous for these mishaps that "bogged at Inskip" has become a spectator sport, with locals often setting up chairs to watch the daily chaos caused by inexperienced or under-prepared drivers.
