Why does Opal only charge $1?

The fares are calculated the same way as regular Opal fares, so the card does not appear on your credit card until the end of the day. When you tap on for the first time, you are charged a $1 pre-authorisation (it will show as pending on your bank account balance).

The $1 fare can be booked for up to four children in any group when travelling with one or more adults who pay full (Adult Peak or Standard) fare. Adults and children need to be from the same household. Seats for additional children are charged at the current Child fare.

Simply tap on and tap off with your contactless card or device on the Opal reader to pay the Adult fare and receive all the same travel benefits. Contactless payments are available on all public transport in the Opal network. Reduced travel fares are not currently available using contactless payments.
