Being put on "standby" in 2026 usually happens for one of three reasons: overbooking, missed connections, or voluntary changes. Most airlines intentionally overbook flights, betting that a small percentage of passengers won't show up; if everyone does show, those without seat assignments are moved to the standby list. You might also find yourself on standby if your previous flight was delayed and you missed your original connection, as the airline must wait for an open seat on a later flight to "protect" you. Finally, some travelers choose "voluntary standby" to try and catch an earlier flight than the one they booked. In all cases, your priority on the list is determined by your fare class and frequent flyer status. Gate agents will wait until the very last minute—usually 10 to 15 minutes before departure—to clear standby passengers once they are certain there are no more "confirmed" passengers coming through the gate.
