Why is Corfu Airport closed?

Corfu International Airport “Ioannis Kapodistrias” will suspend operations this month and again in January for the second phase of construction works on its runway, the airport's operator, Fraport Greece, said on Monday.

As of early 2026, Corfu International Airport (CFU) has been experiencing temporary, scheduled closures primarily for major runway renovation and reconstruction. These works, managed by Fraport Greece, are part of a long-term modernization project aimed at improving safety and increasing the airport's capacity for the heavy summer tourist traffic. In January 2026, the airport was closed for a two-week period (from January 12 to January 27) to allow for complete resurfacing and technical upgrades that cannot be safely performed while planes are landing. While emergency medical and search-and-rescue flights are still permitted, regular commercial traffic is diverted to nearby hubs like Preveza or Ioannina. These winter closures are a strategic move to ensure the "Rugged Coast" gateway is fully operational and optimized before the peak season begins in May. Once finished, the new runway will be able to handle larger aircraft and a higher frequency of flights, reducing the tarmac delays that have historically plagued the airport during the busy July and August months.
