Why is Destin sand so soft?

Centuries of wave and water action eventually ground the quartz into smaller and smaller grains, producing the sugar-fine sand Destin residents enjoy today.

The sand in Destin, Florida, is world-famous for its "sugar-white" color and "powder-soft" texture because it is composed of 99% pure Appalachian quartz. The story of this sand began over 12,000 years ago during the last Ice Age. As the glaciers retreated, they pulverized the quartz rock of the Appalachian Mountains into a fine, talc-like powder. This sediment was carried south by the Apalachicola River and deposited into the Gulf of Mexico. Unlike most beach sand, which is a mixture of ground-up shells and various minerals, Destin's sand is essentially "pure rock." This high quartz content is also why the sand "squeaks" when you walk on it and why it remains cool to the touch even on the hottest July days; the quartz reflects the sun's heat rather than absorbing it. For 2026 visitors, this unique geological heritage creates the "Emerald Coast" effect, as the white sand on the ocean floor reflects sunlight back through the clear water, giving it its iconic jewel-toned hue.
