Why is Eurostar not going to Amsterdam?

That's because in 2024 the oh-so-convenient Eurostar service from London to the Dutch capital will be stopping for up to 11 months. The closure is down to huge renovation work being carried out at Amsterdam Centraal from June 2024 to May 2025.

As of early 2026, the direct Eurostar service from London to Amsterdam has been significantly impacted—and at times suspended—due to a massive multi-year renovation of Amsterdam Centraal Station. The Dutch national railway (NS) is currently expanding the station to handle increased passenger volume, which has necessitated the temporary closure of the international terminal and the specialized Eurostar security/immigration zone. Because the UK is not in the Schengen Area, Eurostar requires a dedicated "sterile" area for passport checks and baggage screening. During this construction period, which is expected to last well into 2026, passengers often have to take a "multi-step" journey, taking a Eurostar to Brussels-Midi and then transferring to a high-speed Thalys or IC train to complete the trip to Amsterdam. While this adds about an hour to the travel time, it ensures that security and border controls are maintained. Direct services are expected to resume with increased capacity once the new, much larger Amsterdam terminal is finalized later in 2026 or 2027.
