Can you ride the Harry Potter train in Scotland? The steam train trip aboard The Jacobite is also known as the Hogwarts Express, and it's possible to take an 84 mile round trip on this while visiting Scotland. It departs from Fort William, the largest town in the Scottish Highlands.
Q: How much does it cost to ride the Hogwarts Express? A: While it will cost you a park-to-park ticket, it does not cost any extra. You will never have to purchase a ticket to ride only the Hogwarts Express.
The main reason is this is the only way to make sure you see absolutely everything that the Wizarding World of Harry Potter has to offer. The other main reason we think the Hogwarts Express is worth it is that it's a convenient way to travel between the two parks and you can enjoy a different experience both ways.
The attraction will be closed from December 10 through December 16, 2023. Please keep in mind that these dates can change. The brief closure is most likely maintenance related.

Two five-car trains occupy a single track that runs through the backstage area of the Universal Orlando Resort – but guests will never know because there are no windows in the cars. Both trains face the same direction and will not turn around.
The Harry Potter train is the Jacobite Express and it's located in the town of Fort William in the Scottish Highlands. Fort William is actually home to many great sights including the UK's highest mountain, Ben Nevis!
Sadly, the train doesn't depart from the real Platform 9 and ¾ at Kings Cross Station. Instead, the train, operated by West Coast Railways, leaves from Fort William, about a two-hour drive from Glasgow, and runs to Mallaig in the Highlands of Scotland.
WCR, based in Carnforth, Lancashire, owns a fleet of steam locomotives including Olton Hall, the train used as the Hogwarts Express in the Harry Potter films.
You can only access this attraction if you have a park-to-park ticket, though! In my opinion, you can absolutely fit everything you want to do in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in one day, even without Express Passes. You just need to be strategic about your itinerary!
It makes this run at about six times a year, and probably more often than that, as needed. It carries students to Hogwarts Castle at the start and end of every term. The train leaves Platform 9¾ without fail on September 1 at 11 o'clock in the morning, arriving at Hogsmeade Station in the early evening.
How scary is the Hogwarts Express? We rate the Hogwarts Express one out of five Dementors in terms of fear factor. With a smooth ride and a mostly passive experience, the attraction really is designed for the whole family.
We learned from a Universal employee that it takes 35 minutes to leave Diagon Alley, exit the park, enter Islands of Adventure and walk to Hogwarts. So if the wait is 40 minutes for the Hogwarts Express (and your kids can handle the hike) don't take the train. You'll save time just walking around.
Definitely beats walking if there is little to no wait for the train, but the lines can get long, so it's actually faster to walk from park to park than to wait in this line if it's long. I'm not a die hard Harry Potter fan.
