Why is Holland tunnel instead of bridge?

Because of the Hudson River was a heavy shipping harbor. The Holland (1927) and Lincoln (1937) tunnels allowed open road traffic without a huge bridge needed to span large ships. It wouldn't be until the George Washington Bridge (1937) and the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge (1964) that roadways were built over the water.
