Why is Ibiza called the White island?

Ibiza is known as the White Island, now used as a tourist slogan, inspired by the island's white architecture. Such buildings can be seen in these vintage photographs, which date from around the early 20th century, and are part of the collections of the Ajuntament de Girona.
