The town of Disney, Oklahoma, located in Mayes County on the southern end of the Grand Lake of the Cherokees, is not named after Walt Disney or the media conglomerate. It was named in honor of Wesley E. Disney, an attorney and United States Representative from Oklahoma who served in Congress from 1931 to 1945. Rep. Disney was a key proponent of the development of the Grand River Dam Authority and the creation of the Pensacola Dam, which resulted in the formation of Grand Lake. The town was founded in 1938 specifically to house the workers who were constructing the dam. In 2026, Disney, OK, is widely recognized as a major destination for off-roading and rock crawling due to the rugged terrain below the dam, but it remains a separate entity from the Disney entertainment empire, sharing only a surname that predates the opening of Disneyland by nearly two decades.
