Why is it called Penguin Island?

Penguin Island was first recorded in 1820 during a British expedition. It was so-named because of the vast numbers of penguins that could be seen along its shoreline from the ship as it passed by.

Penguin Island is a magnet for nature lovers and is home to a colony of Little Penguins, seabirds and marine life. The moderate 1.5 kilometre loop trail starts at the jetty landing area and allows walkers to experience close encounters with the flora and fauna.

For Penguin Island, wear comfortable footwear. Most visitors wear thongs or sandals. Hats, sunscreen and a long sleeve or UV resistant shirt are recommended for sun protection. Bring swimmers and towels if you are planning water activities.

They are only active on land at night. They leave from the colony early in the morning before sun-rise, and return to the colony after dark. During the day, if the penguins decide not to go to sea, they will stay hidden inside their nests.
