Why is it so hard to catch marlin?

The Blue Marlin is a notoriously difficult fish to catch, due to its incredible strength and speed. They are known for their long, acrobatic fights, which can last for hours, testing the endurance and skill of even the most experienced angler.

Catching a marlin is considered the "pinnacle" of sportfishing because of the fish's extreme physical capabilities and intelligence. Marlins (especially Blue and Black) are among the fastest animals in the ocean, capable of bursts up to 80 km/h (50 mph), which can snap lines or empty a reel in seconds. They are "apex predators" that use their long, spear-like bills to slash and stun prey, often knocking a hook out of their mouth before a fisherman can set it. Once hooked, they are famous for their "acrobatics," leaping out of the water to use their massive weight to break the line or throw the hook. Because they are migratory and solitary, simply finding one in the vast ocean is a challenge that requires expensive sonar and hours of trolling. Furthermore, they can weigh over 450 kg (1,000 lbs), turning the catch into a brutal physical battle of endurance that can last for several hours, often leaving the angler physically exhausted and the gear pushed to its absolute breaking point.

If catch and release angling is conducted using best practice methods, many scientific studies have shown the released fish generally has a very high chance of survival with little to no measurable impacts on fitness.
